❖

"Get it right now" he said,
Poked me in the eye with his stick.
"You'll never get through life", he said,
Without your reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic!"

"But if you work hard my boy",
And a grin slid across his face.
"Then you'll get there in the end,
Maybe sell things from a case"

"But if you don't do it now
Then you just don't have a hope.
It's simple just to hang
If you've got a lot of rope".

"And then it's too late to play,
The game is over and you'll say:"

"Please sir, why didn't you tell me that
Exams is where it's really at,
I'll eat my hat
And spit it right over you".

Here's the proud day at last
There's a paper prize for you.
It's lying on your desk
In a ribbon bright and blue.

But though your marks may be good,
An alpha plus I hear,
There's one more test to take,
Perhaps you'll stay another year!

Because you've got to be equipped,
When the bills yell to be met,
The world's a nasty place,
And you're not quite ready yet.

And so it's too soon to say
"The game is over",
And you'll hear:

"Dear sir let me inform you
Exams is where it's really at
Degrees and that
Are needed for this interview".
